Discernment Committee Members


Katherine Rohrer, co-chairPast member, Procter Foundation. Kathy is Vice Provost for Academic Programs at Princeton University and is a parishioner, choir singer, and former vestry member at Trinity Church, Princeton.
Vance Smith, co-chairVance Smith is Chair of the ECP Oversight Committee and a Trustee of the Procter Foundation. He teaches in the Department of English at Princeton, and is the Director of the Program in Medieval Studies. He became an Anglican while growing up in Kenya, and is currently on academic leave taking care of his newborn daughter, Olivia.
Stephen BuzardStephen Buzard is a sophomore at Westminster Choir College, majoring in organ performance. He is the current music director for ECP, and he has overseen the formation of the Lux choir, as well as a significant growth in the attendance of Westminster students at ECP. He is also organ scholar at Trinity Episcopal Church, Princeton, working with music director Tom Whittemore. Stephen is a cradle Episcopalian and an unabashed Anglophile. In his free time, he drinks tea and coffee and watches Brit-coms. You may also spot him playing the occasional game of cricket, provided the weather is nice!
Derrick ChambersDerrick Chambers has a B.Phil from Oxford University in medieval philosophy, and is in the M.Div program at Princeton Theological Seminary. Before he became a member of the American Philosophical Association he played in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars and rugby for Oxford University. Derrick is a member of the Roman Catholic Church.
Donald EdwardsDonald Edwards is the President Emeritus of the American Boychoir School and the former Vice President of Rutgers University. He is a Trustee of the Procter Foundation, and the Senior Warden of Trinity Church, Princeton.
The Rev. Joanne Epply-SchmidtThe Rev. Joanne Epply-Schmidt ('82) finished at Yale Divinity in 1988. Having served many years in parish ministry, Joanne now works with a non-profit as a teaching storyteller serving at-risk and incarcerated youth.
Emily GarciaClass of 2010, Princeton University; ECP convener. Emily is a sophomore Comparative Literature major from Northern Colorado. She joined the Episcopal Church last year and is now eagerly awaiting the chance to attend divinity school and seminary. This year she is a convener (student leader) as well as the "Food Czarina" (head chef) of Wednesday Night Dinners. When not in church she is the assistant to the director of Cotsen Children's Library, and also occasionally does homework for her classes in French, Spanish, religion, and poetry.
Laura JohnsonLaura Johnson ('09) is a junior English major from St. Paul, Minnesota. She is an ELCA Lutheran who found her church home at the Episcopal Church at Princeton during her second week on campus. She is serving for her second year as an ECP convener. When she is not participating in ECP activities, she also runs a weekly Philosophy Table, serves as Treasurer of the Princeton Shakespeare Company, and participates actively in theater on campus (as an actress, director and stage manager).

Rebecca LegettRebecca Leggett is a senior at Princeton University, studying mechanical engineering. She has been involved with ECP since her freshman year and served as a convener (student leader) in 2007.
Catherine NewcombeCatherine Newcombe is the Treasurer of the Procter Foundation and for the ECP Oversight Committee. She is a member of Trinity Church, Princeton, and is the Major Gifts Officer at The Institute for Advanced Study.

Joel ThompsonJoel Thompson is currently a senior at Princeton studying physics and computer science. Growing up, he had mainly attended Catholic and Baptist churches but had stopped going to church by high school. His first time at an Episcopal Church was ECP's Easter Vigil his freshman year, and he has not stopped coming back, getting baptized at the Easter Vigil sophomore year, becoming convener his junior year, and now serving on this discernment committee.
