Rules

Eligibility

There are no restrictions on age or affiliation. Youth, adult, and non-collegiate competitors are welcome.

Same-sex partnerships are permitted.

Newcomers must have started dancing after August 1, 2009.

For all other levels, eligibility is determined per dance based on the YCN proficiency point system (please include all competitions you have attended in your proficiency point calculations) - if you have accumulated 7 or more points in an event at a particular level, you are no longer eligible to compete at that level. Consider Beginner to be equivalent to Bronze, Intermediate to Silver, and Advanced to Gold. Both partners must be eligible for a given level to dance for the couple to dance at that level, and the couple must be eligible for all dances in a linked event to dance in that event.

Double Registration

For beginner and newcomer level events, any given couple may register at only one level for each dance. However, you do not need to register for the same level in all dances.

In short, intermediate level and above couples can double register.

One partner in a couple may register for two levels, provided that
  • He/she is eligible for both levels.
  • He/she dances with a different partner in the two levels.
All couples, except for those competing in Open (American style)/Champ (International style) level events, are allowed to compete in Syllabus events.

Costumes

All levels except Newcomer allow costumes. Costumes include:
  • anything found in a ballroom specialty store or made by hand
  • anything with rhinestones, feathers, fringe, etc.
  • tailsuits or Latin shirts with slitted front or similar styling

Syllabi

Newcomers are restricted to ISTD/USISTD/similar bronze syllabus figures. Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced competitors can perform any ISTD/USISTD/similar gold or below syllabus figures. Open competitors are not restricted to syllabus, but no lifts are allowed.

Events

We reserve the right to combine/split events to get the appropriate number of competitors per event.

Liability

Princeton University, Dillon Gymnasium, and the Princeton Ballroom Dance Club are not liable for any injury or other misfortune that occurs during the competition.
