Purpose

The purpose of this FAQ is to help Linux users in Princeton to configure their system and take full advantage of the computing resources at Princeton (for example, Dormnet and cluster printers). This assumes

  • you have a Dormnet compatible machine, and
  • you already have Linux installed, or are going to do so.

We aim here to provide, on those assumptions, a guide to configure commonly used programs and utilities, and to provide some further reference for more advanced topics. Because of the myriad of configuration schemes spread out among different distributions of linux and different programs, we try to provide as general an approach a possible. Of course, there will be short-comings, so in the Wiki-spirit, please feel free to add new topics or correct old ones.

This FAQ, however, does not pretend to be a guide to installing the various Linux distributions. For that, I recommend Google (http://www.google.com) and The Linux Documentation Project (http://en.tldp.org).
