Candidate Statements

President

Yu-sung Huang ‘12

Yu-sung Huang

Hi all! Hope you all had a good intercession. Just in case you don’t know me, my name is Yu-Sung, a sophomore who has enjoyed being in TASA ever since my frosh fall banquet. I’m running for President this year because I’ve always take great pleasures in my involvements with TASA, and want to be able to work in an even larger capacity for our amazing organization. From working on the Frosh Council and being an Night Market Co-Chair last year to co-leading the Frosh Council this year, I’ve gathered much experience working as a leader as well as promoting and maintaining friendly relation with other student groups and administration on campus, whether it be from organizing Night Market intergroup meetings or putting together All-You-Can-Make Buffet. As such, I’m confident that I can do a decent, if not good job, as a president.

To keep this statement short and sweet, only one more thing. I do not believe this candidate statement (or in fact any statement) can truly encapsulate me as a leader or a TASA member. Rather, I hope that your personal experience working with me for the past year (or the past semester) has proven to you my capability as a leader and my enthusiasm for TASA. Hope you guys have a good semester, and I’ll really appreciate your support!

Vice President

Brian Chen ‘13

Brian Chen

Everybody good, everybody hao, My name is Brian Chen and I am running for VP. I can’t say I have much practice “being a” or “running for” veep, heck I haven’t even been governor of Alaska, but I guess I dabbled in leadership in high school. I recall being president of my class once and captain of my teams but that was a long time ago in a school far, far away. Here at Princeton I am in Frosh Council as you probably are/were if you are reading this. For one, I love Frosh Council and everyone in it, and by love I mean I love ‘you specifically’ just as if you were family, and then I add some more love on top of that (think West Virginia family loving). -and I’d love you more if you voted for me- Either way, I love freshmen/freshwomen so much I’d even be Vicey if that meant I could lead the council. However, if there is anything I crave more than frosh it would be other student organizations. In my mind, associating with alien, extra-TASAstrial “TWC’s, APAHM’s, IC’s, etc.” is the most exotic, most delectable privilege that the Vice President holds. As VP I will “liaison” with other groups and the ITASA National Board with such fervor that we will not only be visible on campus but we will be the only thing they see. Ever heard of the elephant in the room? Well screw sly, expressions of awkwardness; I’ll bring the elephant; I’ll bring the lions, tigers, zebras, and the whole San Diego zoo to the room. That’s the type of cultural visibility I want to offer. Again, Brian Chen, VP, vote, thanks.

Jeff Cherng ‘12

Jeff Cherng

If there’s one thing to know about me, it’s that I more or less know every Asian kid on campus; given that a large part of the VP’s job description is relations with the other Asian student organizations, I figure I’m ready-made for the position! As logistics director of last year’s Asian Night Market and our marvelous bid for 2011’s East Coast iTASA conference, as well as godfather of our TASA families, I’m no stranger to this stuff. People know me as rather laid-back, but I prefer to think I strike the perfect balance between composure and commitment that lets me get the job done in style. If anything, sleep is the first thing to go before my responsibilities go by the wayside; I’ll never flake out just because it’s past my nonexistent bedtime (*coughcindiyim*). In all seriousness though, I feel I’ve proven myself over the past year in TASA as a reliable board member who doesn’t shirk from his duties, and am ready to take on a larger role in this glorious organization. If you’ll have me as your vice president, I promise you won’t regret it like some of our parents regret voting for Chen Shui-Bian!

Any fan mail should go to hcherng@princeton.edu

Annie Khoa ‘13

Annie Khoa

Hi, my name is Annie Khoa, and I’m running for vice president. Although I am only a freshman, I am also Jeremy Blum’s TASA daughter. (I assume you all know that he is the current VP.) So it is only natural that I take over the family business.
I loved working with my fellow freshman council members in coordinating All-You-Can-Make this year. Although it was an enjoyable experience, at the same time, I got a taste of what goes on behind the scenes and the responsibility required to run TASA.
In high school, I served as vice president on the very first board—and subsequently president—of National English Honor Society. Consequently, I had to undertake much responsibility in the establishment of the club’s foundation. I organized projects that helped students foster an interest in English, so I am very familiar with organizing events, delegating tasks, and getting things done.
One of the VP’s duties is to chair the freshman council. I would love to guide the freshmen and help them cultivate their own love for TASA. I like to think of myself as bubbly, passionate, and receptive. So don’t you worry, the little freshmen will be safe in my hands.
I have always wanted to visit Taiwan, but I still have yet to do so. Please don’t deprive me of this opportunity to become involved in Taiwanese culture, and remember to vote for me!

Anting Liu ‘12

Anting Liu

Hey TASA! I’m Anting, who you probably knew from the now famous D-bag story thanks to our great Alex Shih. In any case, I can’t begin to tell you how much I have enjoyed serving on TASA board since Frosh Council and Night Market Committee last year, and as Political Chair and co-leader of Frosh Council this past year. As one of the very few students directly from Taiwan, I take great pride in my heritage, speaking both Mandarin and Taiwanese fluently, and my passion for international affairs concerning Taiwan was one of the main reasons that led me to the States for college. On campus I believe my dedication to Taiwanese issues has been evident—for one, I was invited to give a talk on Taiwan at Forbes, in addition to the numerous heated discussions at dining halls that I absolutely enjoyed (even when I sounded pissed). Last November I was also luckily selected as one of the 5 Taiwanese delegates to attend the annual Strait Talk symposium at Brown, which presented a consensus paper about the cross-strait issue at Foreign Relations Council in NYC. I also recently published a book in Taiwan that allowed me to expand my connections there to benefit TASA and hopefully ITASA for the coming year. Precisely because of this passion for Taiwan, I hope to continue to serve on the board next year as the Vice President, and I believe that my experiences have sufficiently prepared me for the responsibilities. Please don’t hesitate to email me (anliu@) if you have any question, and thanks so much for your vote!

Treasurer

Jack Ching ‘13

Jack Ching

As a TASA freshman council member, I believe I have had full experience in planning, organizing, and running both the TASA Shaved Ice event and the TASA All-You-Can-Eat Buffet. I would love the opportunity to give back more to the club that has given me such a great community of Princeton students by serving as the Treasurer for this organization. I understand the work involved as the treasurer, and I have already begun worked with Alex on iTASA budget / funding issues, so I believe I have the enthusiasm and the commitment to this club that a TASA board position requires. Furthermore, if you have seen my report on in the December newsletter about our AYCE event, you can be assured that my communication skills are definitely up to par when I need to draft proposals for funding. Besides having good organizational skills to keep deadlines in check, you can count on me to do my best in taking care of reimbursements and making sure our account does not go into debt. On the board, I can also bring in a unique position as a member of the International Consortium, and perhaps encourage cooperation between TASA and other student clubs, perhaps even not just the Asian organizations. With my experience and connections, I believe I can be a great asset to the TASA Board.

Maple Zhang ‘13

Maple Zhang

I’m Maple Zhang and I would like to run for Treasurer. I have been an active member on TASA’s Frosh Council this past semester and hope to continue working on organizing events for TASA.

Secretary

Chris Teng ‘13

Hey all, I’m Chris Teng, a frosh also known as “cteng”. I love my TASA family; I love my TASA frosh council (and of course the leaders); I love ITASA board; I love TASA. TASA is the shiz. After working on the frosh council, I’ve decided that I’d really like to be more involved in the shiz that is TASA, so I’m running for secretary. Chris Teng? Secretary? You may be thinking, what the crap? However, I will inform you that whilst on frosh council, I took thorough and sometimes even entertaining minutes for each meeting. I also was a major part of that cadre responsible for TASA frosh council’s fantastically successful shaved ice study break, and took a substantial role in all-you-can-make buffet. Early on, I took some heat from certain CSA members about TASA, as some of you may know, but we brushed them off in a classy way. Some know me as “intense about frosh council” and “frosh council elitist” (but hey, when we’re good, we’re good, right?); all I want to do is take notes for you guys. I apologize for the ridiculosity going on above, but I’d really like to serve as your secretary this coming year. Peace.

Social Chair

Audrey Li ‘13

Audrey Li

Hi everyone! My name’s Audrey, and I’m interested in becoming social chair. So, a little bit about me: I’m currently a freshman, I live in Wilson, and I eat way too much junk food in place of real meals. I’m not actually Taiwanese, but I’m all in favor of learning more about its culture. I’m great at organizing events, because even though I get semi-OCD about planning out the details, I still like to have fun. I research things to ridiculous degrees, and want things to be as great as they can possibly be, but ultimately love the results even if things go slightly awry. I like to listen to other people and gather ideas from the group as a collective, because that’s how to best plan a study break, a trip, or whatever else TASA wants to do. At the same time, I like taking the initiative. All in all, I’ll work hard for TASA, and I’ll make sure that we have a good time. I look forward to getting to know everyone better, and thanks for taking the time to read my statement!

Eugenia Zah ‘13

Eugenia Zah

The social chair plans one event every month in order to encourage excitement and interest in Taiwan. If elected to become social chair, I will definitely make sure that these events happen, are exciting, and lots of fun. I am very approachable and will always be open to ideas and suggestions that other people have about potential events. I really want to be able to have events where we can all share and spread our love for Taiwan to others. This position would be perfect for me because I already know a bit about the logistics behind transportation to events, helped with the trip budget for iTASA, and look forward to planning more events aside from the All-You-Can-Make.

Vote for me for social chair! Because voting could never be EZ-er. :)

Publicity Chair

Sophia Jih ‘12

Hey guys! My name’s Sophia and I was TASA’s publicity chair for the past board year. I’d like to continue the job I’ve been doing of making cool, funky posters for TASA events. I’ve had experience using Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, and InDesign, to name a few programs, and I’ve done layouts for several campus-wide publications, including the Daily Princetonian. I also write for the Prince, so with this experience, I think I’m pretty qualified to be a dedicated and innovative publicity chair for TASA in this upcoming year. I promise that I will create original, eye-catching art for publicity and advertising, and that I will work with the rest of the Board in furthering TASA’s objectives of increasing awareness of the Taiwanese culture. Plus, I’ll do all of this promptly and meticulously so that TASA maintains the amazing reputation that it deserves!

If you have any questions at all, feel free to drop off an e-mail to sjih@princeton.edu. Thank you for your time, and I hope you consider voting for me!

Political Chair

Anne Lee ‘13

Anne Lee

Hi TASA!

For those of you who don’t know me (and there are probably a lot of you because I wasn’t on frosh council due to some scheduling conflicts), I’m Anne and I’m from Taiwan. I came to the U.S. for school when I was 13, but currently my family is still based in Taiwan

Having spent most of my life in Taiwan (I was born in the States then immediately went back to Taiwan with my parents after they finished grad school), living in Taipei and attending local, public Taiwanese schools, the influences I received from my childhood environment constitute a major portion of my identity. I attended middle school and the first three years of high school in a suburb of Los Angeles with a very low Taiwanese American population, so I was very excited to find that there are so many Taiwanese people at Princeton!

My first experience with TASA was actually on a plane coming back to the U.S. from Taiwan this past summer, where I met Alex’s mom—she was sitting next to me on our flight (I apologize to those of you who already heard this story =P). Arriving at college, although I was not able to participate in frosh council, I have been part of the ITASA bid team efforts and I really hope to be more involved in TASA through being an officer. Since I consider myself both Taiwanese and American, and I am well acquainted with Taiwanese current events and politics and Taiwanese-American relations, I think I will serve as a good political chair for the upcoming year! I have a lot of experience with student organizations, having held multiple executive offices in high school and now in college; so, not only will I host two fun events relating to Taiwanese politics, I also hope to increase the whole student body’s knowledge of cross-strait relations, the politics involved in Taiwanese-American relations, and Taiwan in general. (So hopefully none of you will be mistaken for being from Thailand when you tell someone you’re from Taiwan, like I was…)

Anyway, sorry for the long ramble, please vote for me!

Cultural Chair

Elizabeth Cai ‘13

Elizabeth Cai

Hey everyone! My name is Elizabeth and I think I would be a fantastic cultural chair for TASA. Growing up near NYC, I’ve always been around a lot of other Chinese/Taiwanese Americans and actively involved in promoting Chinese/Taiwanese culture.

I taught for five years at my local Chinese School; I was president of my high school’s Asian Club and organizer of our annual International Festival (the largest student-run event of the year); and I was secretary of my local chapter of YOCAA (Young Organization of Chinese and Asian Americans), which was basically about promoting Asian culture, organizing celebrations for New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, etc.

“The Cultural Chair is primarily responsible for communication between cultural groups on campus”: I served on CSA frosh council, which would be very valuable because they are arguably the cultural group on campus who we most need, well, facilitated communication with.

Plus, the current cultural chair is one of my TASA fathers.

I was a member of TASA frosh council this past semester and enjoyed that experience immensely. I would really like to be part of TASA board; I know it will be even more rewarding!

Vote for me? 谢谢!

Eric Hsu ‘13

Eric Hsu

Hey TASA! It’s great knowing that even somewhere half around the world, Taiwan still has such a great group of supporters! I’m Eric, and I’m a freshman this year hailing from Taichung, Taiwan, and Princeton weather has truly shown me why Taiwan is considered a ‘tropical’ island!

I would like to run for the cultural chair because after having spent the last 7 years in Taiwan, this is actually the first time I feel homesick for Taiwanese culture, and I want to bring that unique culture further into Princeton. Not only do I want to propagate Taiwanese culture, but I also want to see Taiwanese, Chinese, Cantonese, and many other cultures come together to form a united group – to illustrate our Asia heritage.

I’m looking forward to communicate with the different cultural groups on campus (HKSA, CSA, AASA, etc) about collaborative events – such as hot pots (definitely!) – that can really stand out as some of our best times here at Princeton.

George Hung ‘13

George Hung

Hi, my name is George Hung, and I’m running for Position of Cultural Chair. I am very interested in continuing my involvement with TASA because I have had an incredible time with TASA. As an enthusiastic member of both the ITASA Bid Team and the 2009-2010 TASA Freshman Council, which successfully ran the Shaved Ice Study Break and the All-You Can Make Buffet, I have experience organizing events, running events, and working with other organizations. TASA has been a wonderful basis of friends and socializing, but more importantly, it is the means through which I am able to extend Taiwanese culture, which is incredibly rich. I would like to run for Cultural Chair of TASA because I feel that this is a great way to facilitate my involvement with Taiwanese and Asian culture on campus all the while just enjoying collaborating and working with people. I really look forward to contributing to TASA as Cultural Chair.

Class of 2011 Representative

Mindy Lin ‘11

Mindy Lin

Hey TASA! My name is Mindy Lin. I am currently a junior and one of your co-presidents. I have had an exciting and rewarding past two and a half years serving on TASA’s Frosh Council, and as Vice President, Night Market Co-Chair, and Co-President of TASA. While I would like others to take advantage of the opportunity to take leadership roles in TASA, I am still eager to be a part of the board as your 2011 Class Representative to help out at events. I have found TASA to be a great way to stay connected with the Asian American community here at Princeton, and our study breaks, annual Spring Banquet, and Asian Night Market are worthwhile events that bring the Princeton community together. I would love the chance to continue to contribute to that tradition as a part of TASA board. Thank you!

Class of 2012 Representative

Steve Kuei ‘12

Steve Kuei

Hey, I’m Steve Kuei, a sophomore from Wilson College, and I was interested in running for 2012 Class Representative, the same position I held last year. I enjoyed the past year on the board, from simply hanging out and eating hot pots to helping organize study breaks and working in Asian Night Market. As a result, I am interested in continuing to participate in this group in the coming years, and hope that my experiences with leading in the past will serve well as class representative. I’ve had ample experiences leading, from being my high school math team’s vice-captain (where I organized competitions, transportation, and lodging), to the Princeton Juggling Club co-president, where I manage finances, performances, and our website. In addition, I teach Chinese yo-yo (扯鈴) every Saturday at my local Chinese school, a job I have held for several years. As a result, between teaching and my work on the board last year, I have had active participation in the asian community, and ample experience with both small bureaucracies and leading groups. I hope that as the representative of my class, these skills can be put to good use for upcoming planning and events.

Class of 2013 Representative

Jeffrey Chen ‘13

Jeffrey Chen

大家好! You may know me as Jeffrey, but Taiwan knows me as Chen Chuan-jay. Hopefully, you’ll soon enough know me as the TASA Class of 2013 representative. :) What can I bring to this position? Well, start with my friendships with members of Taiwanese-American student organizations spanning from UCLA to Harvard. Not only do I make monthly trips to New York to meet officers of TASA at both NYU and Columbia, but I also plan on meeting countless others at the ITASA conference. We should be interacting with these other schools more often, especially during holidays like 中秋節 when we can celebrate the coming together of our Taiwanese American family and together chomp on yuebing. Next, look at my reliability in maintaining relationships with alumni. As Senior Class President of University High in Irvine, CA, I’ve kept in contact with the members of the Class of 2009 as well as the school… and a full 9 years before our first planned reunion! Finally, think about when you saw me teaching crowds of hungry Princeton students to wrap dumplings. Or when you saw me rationalizing my way through some problems at the last board meeting. Yes, I do love TASA. And I will do whatever I can to best serve you all!

Webmaster

Jocelyn Chuang ‘13

Jocelyn Chuang

Hi, my name is Jocelyn Chuang, class of 2013, and I am running for the position of TASA Webmaster. I believe that I can be a great asset to the Board due to my experience in photography and my organization skills. Previous photography work has already familiarized me with web album sites such as flickr and picasa, which will be a convenient skill for updating the website. Through my experience as a member of TASA’s frosh council I have become very enthusiastic about both the events and people in TASA, and hope to utilize my skills by making our events accessible to all students and to preserve great memories from TASA.

Non-elected positions

ITASA Representative

Alex Shih ‘11

Alex Shih

Hi, I promise to represent Princeton TASA faithfully on the ITASA National Board. I’ll make sure we stay abreast of the latest events and have tons of fun meeting other schools!

Night Market Co-Chair

Michael Wu ‘10

Michael Wu

I am interested in co-chairing Night Market for this year. I’ve been involved with TASA and Night Market since freshman year, and I am familiar with the inner workings of both. I believe myself to be responsible and competent enough to bring together a successful Night Market. I have an ambition to make this year’s Night Market the best run Night Market so far in my time here at Princeton. I have a good amount of leadership experience from other organizations and know how to delegate and coordinate effectively. Additionally, as a senior without a thesis, I should have a good amount of spare time to dedicate to Night Market.

Eugenia Zah ‘13

Eugenia Zah

When visiting Taiwan, the night market is a place that should not to be missed. I have only fond memories of going to the night market during my visits to Taiwan, eating grilled squid, stinky tofu, and shaved ice at 1 am in the morning while browsing the inexpensive items on sale. Feeling the spirit and atmosphere of the night market is an experience uniquely found in Asia. So I was thoroughly surprised when I visited Princeton during preview to find an Asian night market taking place. Seeing all the the food and games at the event made me reminisce about my times in Taiwan. That is why I would love to be given the opportunity to lead and participate in an event that made me so happy while visiting Princeton as a prefrosh.

I would love to be able to work on the Asian Night Market event and co-chair the committee. I am reliable, organized, and hardworking, and I am passionate about being able to be involved in such an important event. As a frosh council member, I have experience working in the All-You-Can Make Buffet and know what needs to be done to host an event in collaboration with other groups. For the event I helped in various tasks from shopping for groceries to cutting carrots. I also played a part in getting HKSA to collaborate with us for the event. I definitely know that if I am given the opportunity to co-chair the committee I will give it my all and you can definitely count on me to get things done.

Night Market Committee

Jeffrey Chen ‘13

Jeffrey Chen

I’d love to serve the Night Market committee. Last April during Preview weekend, it was stuffing enough kimchi in my mouth to make my eyes water that made me wanna join TASA! In my opinion, there should be more interaction like these contests. Maybe in addition to having a dance crew perform, we should have them teach a couple crowd volunteers (at the expense of tickets hehe) a few tricky moves. Maybe instead of just having a live band play, we should host a karaoke contest. It is ideas like these that beckon me to serve on the committee.
Experience I bring stems mostly from my presidencies in three large high school organizations involved in LARGE events.

Senior Council: Spirit Week – direct the construction of projects to decorate school buildings in a schoolwide class competition. Involved dealing with local businesses, school administrators, and frantic parents. Crafted budget, planned fundraisers, coordinated publicity efforts. Competition also involved contacting dancers to help choreograph a spirit dance.

Junior Classical League: CAJCL State Convention – gathering of 1500 Latin students from across the state of California. Planned competitions (academic, musical, athletic, artistic), coordinated workshops, facilitated publicity, ordered food, etc. And all on a tight budget! Also planned events from school banquets to freshmen hazing dinners to weenie roasts.

I’d love to help to get an idea of how to run the Night Market, as I do hope to chair the committee next year. I’ve been running meetings with agendas, working with school administrators, and delegating responsibilities since 11th grade. If you believe I’d be best apprenticized by chairing this year as well, I wouldn’t mind. :)

Eric Hsu ‘13

Eric Hsu

Hey TASA! I’m Eric, and though I am already running for the Cultural Chair, I would also like to run to be a part of the 2010 Nightmarket Committee. I grew up in Taiwan living amidst the great Taiwanese tradition of the nightmarkets, and I am psyched to know that even at Princeton, this famous and well-loved tradition will be upheld. I am familiar with many of the most common snacks and entertainments found at some of Taiwan’s greatest nightmarkets (http://program.tcfsh.tc.edu.tw/news/main.php&rct=j&ei=C5hnS-L3NozN8QbX3pW9Bw&sa=X&oi=smap&resnum=2&ct=result&cd=2&ved=0CA4QqwMoATAB&q=taichung+first+high+school&usg=AFQjCNEn9AJKB-1MgCheBQKBcQ-Gzl7aPw”>一中街, 逢甲夜市, 士林夜市, etc), and I would love to see them here in April. Let’s show Princeton how it’s done in Taiwan!

Chris Teng ‘13

Chris Teng

I’d really like to get a sense of what TASA is responsible for on campus, and being a part of night market planning would be a really great way to do that. I really enjoyed planning all of the events for frosh council, even doing the annoying jobs like buying last-minute things and waiting on event location approval, so I feel that being on night market committee would be a good role for me. Seems like fun, and it’s the biggest TASA-organized event of the year. Sweet.

Gregory Peng ‘12

Greg Peng

I’m interested in helping out with Nightmarket; specifically, not as a co-chair but being part of the Nightmarket committee.
