About Tau Beta Pi

The Engineering Honor Society

Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society, was founded in 1885 to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their alma mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as undergraduates in the field of engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in the engineering colleges.

Tau Beta Pi is the only engineering honor society representing the entire engineering profession. It is the nation's second-oldest honor society, founded at Lehigh University in 1885 to recognize students of distinguished scholarship and exemplary character. There are now collegiate chapters at 234 US colleges and universities, active alumnus chapters in 16 districts across the country, and a total initiated membership of 502,002.

The New Jersey Delta Chapter at Princeton University was founded in 1972, and has since initiated over 1,400 members. Tau Beta Pi members are an integral part of the engineering community at Princeton and volunteer their time each semester in service of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and their fellow students.

Service & Activities

Tours of the Engineering Facilities

When: Monday - Friday, 11:45 am & 2:45 pm

Where: Leave from SEAS Office, C-wing of the E-Quad on Olden Street. See map.

What: Tau Beta Pi members volunteer as tour guides for the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). Specifically targeted for prospective undergraduates, but open to everyone, these tours provide a comprehensive overview of the engineering facilities available and of undergraduate engineering at Princeton. For prospective students potentially interested in engineering, these tours are a perfect complement to the Orange Key tours, which cover the entire campus and do not focus exclusively on SEAS.

Contact: Vanessa Ross (vanessa@princeton.edu or 609-258-4554) for more information. Reservations encouraged but not required.

Engineering Course Study Halls

What: Tau Beta Pi members lead study halls and tutoring sessions for approximately 5-6 engineering courses offered each semester. Tau Beta Pi members, having taken and excelled in the course for which they offer the study hall, are in a unique position to offer guidance and insight to their fellow students currently taking the course. Students in each course will receive an email at the start of the semester from the professor teaching the course with information regarding the study halls and contact information for the TBP member leading the study hall. Some study halls are held weekly in a fixed location, while others are set up on the basis of appointments. Students should contact the TBP member leading the course if they are interested in attending a study hall or attending a tutoring session.

Who: The following study halls are offered for the Fall 2008 semester:
