2009 USG Elections - Candidate Statements

  1. Choose Your Class Year:
  2. Read the candidate statements below.
U-Councilor
Candidate Photo
John A. Zumpetta '11
I am running for reelection so that I can continue to work to improve student life on campus. Over the past year, I have worked on three committees and maintained perfect attendance at all meetings. If reelected, I will push for an expansion of the LaundryView system, which currently monitors four campus laundry rooms online, work with the Academic Calendar Reform group to establish a definitive stance on academic calendar reform, create a mental health week with my Mental Health committee, and help develop a system with my Civic Engagement group to increase incentives to give back to the community. Most importantly, I will be responsive to your needs and concerns and be your voice in the Senate.
Carter E. Greenbaum '12
I am very excited to run for a position on the Undergraduate Student Government’s U-Council. As a member of the U-Council, I promise to faithfully represent all the views and opinions of the student body, not just my own. Further, I will work on a project to move speaking engagements and academic activities from the regular 4:30-6:30 time slot to a different time. Using 4:30-6:30 as the default time slot unfairly biases against the 25% of Princetonians who have prior commitments daily during that time: sports, theatre or other practices. We should have fair access to all academic enrichment opportunities! Vote Carter for U-Council.

Julia Kaplan '11
I am running for re-election to the U-Council so that I can continue to work on initiatives to improve student life.

As a U-Councilor, I have:

-Led the USG Sustainability Working Group as "point person" in charge of organizing all aspects of the group
-Worked on a new "Student Sustainability Pledge"
-Had perfect attendance at weekly USG meetings and monthly CPUC meetings.

Next year I want to:

-Continue leading the Sustainability Working Group
-Launch the Student Sustainability Pledge, allowing undergrads to contribute to the University's sustainability initiatives
-Coordinate an LED light bulb exchange
-Implement a printing policy that is fair to students and the environment
-Continue to have perfect attendance at all USG meetings

Alexander D. Pretko '12
Hey guys, my name is Alex Pretko, and I’ve decided to run for U-Council. Why should you vote for me, you ask? I have the three qualities most essential for any successful U-Councilor - a willingness to work with others for the common good of the student body, a steadfast dedication to the improvement of our University, and, most importantly, a receptiveness to your needs and concerns. If you give me the honor of representing you on the U-Council, I will strive to better the University in whatever way I can and to effect the changes that YOU want.

Kelly C. Roache '12
Hailing from the Jersey Shore, Kelly is a member of the class of 2012 and a resident of Forbes College. This past year she was elected 2012 Class Secretary, planning and executing study breaks, coordinating events and giveaways, and working to put on the Spring Formal and Winter Semiformal. While she has enjoyed meeting and serving her fellow classmates in this capacity, Kelly looks forward to the opportunity that U-Council provides to effect broader change in university policy. In particular, she would like to explore expanding Tigercard usage, address ambiguities in the USG constitution, and perpetuate an atmosphere of civic engagement at Princeton.

Steven J. Lindsay '12
My name is Steve Lindsay ‘12 from West Milford, New Jersey. I intend to work for constitutional and voting reform, primarily to codify apparent clarifications. I also wish to ensure that the University continues to improve upon the mental health services that must be provided to all students, no matter the situation or crisis. To promote USG transparency, I would like the USG to institute a brief period of time every week, or every other week, in which the President, and any other member of the USG may be questioned directly by students. Similar to Parliament’s Prime Minister’s Questions, students would be able to air their grievances, praise the USG, or question the USG’s actions. Thank you for your time.

Hi everyone! It’s been an honor to serve as your U-Councilor for the past two years.

-- In the fall, I was USG's housing liaison, and I was instrumental in making sure the administration annexed as little of the best upperclass dorms for next year.

-- This semester, I’ve worked on sustainability issues and professor-student communication.

-- I've also worked with the administration and trustees as a member of the Honorary Degrees Committee.

I’d love to have the opportunity to continue to be a strong voice for the student body, and I’d be honored to have your vote.

Thanks!
USG Social Chair
Candidate Photo
John P. Wetenhall '11
Hi, I'm John Wetenhall and I'm running for USG social chair. I would like to focus on getting the best performers for the Lawnparties and Deans Date concerts, as well as improving other USG-sponsored social events. I would discontinue poorly attended events and reallocate the funds to the campus wide events to make them even better. Feel free to contact me with suggestions.
USG President

Connor L. Diemand-Yauman '10
Since freshman year, I have dedicated my time as 2010 Class President to representing my peers and promoting unity at Princeton through dynamic events and initiatives.

I’ve been through the system and cultivated real relationships with administrators and student leaders while launching projects such as the CFL Exchange, OwnWhatYouThink Campaign, and Down Syndrome Conference (

As USG President, I will strive to make visible changes in a wide breadth of student issues including: Alcohol Policy, McCosh Health Center, P/D/F, Sustainability, Civic Engagement, Housing and general issues of Undergraduate life (www.cdy4usg.com/issues.php).

I have the experience, drive, and dedication to make the most out of this opportunity and I humbly ask for your support.

USG Treasurer
Candidate Photo
Trevor M. Martin '11
Over this past week's campaign it has been a pleasure getting to meet many of you and hearing your thoughts and concerns regarding USG. If I have the honor to serve as your USG treasurer I will bring a wealth of experience from my contributions to class government as Vice-President, managing large budgets and planning projects. In addition to maintaining a balanced and healthy budget, I have many ideas regarding how to make sure USG gets the most out of its money. A few:
-Bigger, better Lawnparties
-Expand funding of student-groups
-More free-movie-nights at Garden-Theater/Frist
-More school-wide study breaks/free-stuff
I sincerely hope to work with you as treasurer and look forward to listening to your ideas!
Academics Chair
Candidate Photo
Ben A. Lund '10
Serving as Academics Chair this past year, I represented the student body's academic interests in meetings with Dean Malkiel and three student-faculty committees. In this time, we made substantial progress: there will be no 9 am exams the day after Dean's Date; course evaluations will be conducted online, making data accessible to students as they select courses; the peer advising system has been reformed to select the best peer advisors. Despite these successes, however, there are still many hurdles. P/D/F policy, academic calendar reform, academic advising, and monitoring grade deflation are the most pressing academic issues of the next term. I hope that you will allow me to continue to represent your interests as the USG Academics Chair.
Undergraduate Life Chair
Candidate Photo
Cameron M. Browne '12
My name is Cameron Browne. Despite this being my first year here I have already seen some things that need to change. First, our school is too segregated to be considered one of the top universities around the world. We have so many races and cultures represented at this school and it is a shame that they do not interact more through more cultural events. Second, I feel there should be fun alternatives to studying and binge drinking, like more concerts and school trips. Finally, I want to come up with ways to heighten our school spirit. I have so many more ideas and am very motivated to organize great things for this university so please vote for me.

Arthur R. Levy '10
RE-ELECT ARTHUR LEVY

-Created spring Dillon survey that led to renovations and new machines in Stephens Fitness Center.

-Put up row markers in Lot 23, along with new lighting and signs to be added soon.

-Collaborated extensively with administrators, built relationships, and saw real results.

Current and Future:

-Labyrinth: lowering textbook prices and widening the used book selection.
-Public Safety: improving student/officer relations and removing the infamous Residential Hall Patrols.

If re-elected, I promise to keep trying to bring change to these two areas of undergraduate life, as well as working on other issues of concern to you!
Campus and Community Affairs Chair

George Tsivin '10
Hello Princeton!

My name is George Tsivin and if I could I would sleep with USG. While I've served my grade as a Class Senator, I've really applied myself to bettering Princeton through some personal initiatives. These are my babies and I still care about them deeply.

- Point Redesign
- USG Bookstore
- Labyrinth Discounts
- Free Student Scanning

I continue to work with Labyrinth to make books more affordable and accessible. Some projects include Amazon price-matching, book delivery, and textbook rental!

My time in USG has truly shaped who I am today. I've learned much and am grateful and I look forward to lighting the fire of the student body.

So remember,
Vote Tsivin for Good Livin'
