Princeton University USG2009 USG Elections - Candidate Statements
USG President
Michael E. Yaroshefsky '12
Serving as the IT Chair over the past year, I went well beyond my defined role to broadly impact how the USG accomplishes its goals. From overhauling our elections process to serving as a trusted adviser to the president, I have worked to improve the efficiency and dependability of the USG. The hands-on experience, connections with high-level administrators, and trust of the senate that I have gained will enable me to lead the USG with a fresh, enthusiastic approach. I will continue to improve the USGs openness and responsiveness with the utmost dedication that I have demonstrated this year. Visit www.MikeYaro.com for my full platform and list of ideas or email me at yaro@.
John H. Lindeman II '11
I really have only one platform I'm running on: I want softer toilet paper on campus. To me, its a realistic goal that can drastically improve the quality of life on campus. So if you want softer toilet paper, I'm your man.
Mykola S. Petrenko '13
My name is Mykola Petrenko and I am hoping to be one of your Freshman Class Senators. I am very interested in helping to form University policies and help make our years at Princeton the most enjoyable and memorable years of our lives. As well as taking up new ideas that you all have to be looked at by the senate, I would like to address the potential changes to the academic calendar, P/D/F policy, grade deflation policy, and help improve the eating club-university relationship. I look forward to meeting you all and being your eyes, ears, and voice in the senate and the workings of the University.
Flavia Brancusi '12
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen of 2012,I would be honored serve as your representative in the USG Senate. I have held many positions in which I proved leadership qualities, multicultural understanding, a keen spirit of observation, and a diplomatic approach to problem-solving. I will keep an open mind and ear to the interests of our class, and look for feasible ways to get things done (in particular, PDF policy reform and partnering with Labyrinth to lower textbook prices). I believe that well-informed students have better chances of raising viable points and have the ability to find more efficient solutions; I will keep you apprised of developing issues, "from your campus to your hippocampus"! Jack E. Altman '11
I want to be your USG President because I believe in the organizations potential to improve students lives and in my ability to create real change. In my time as USG Executive Secretary, I have contributed to initiatives spanning from grade deflation to dodgeball, and encouraged collaboration with student groups and class governments. At the core of student government is the responsibility to obtain and act upon student input. By increasing opportunities for students to voice their opinions, I will turn this promise into a reality. In my eyes, USG has exactly one goal to improve the lives of students. Along with my running mate, Sam Dorison, I plan to fulfill that goal.
Brian S. Edwards '11
The USG can be much more than an organization that just puts on study breaks. Its time to focus on more substantial goals like upgrading the campus toilet paper to 2PLY! I will strain to make positive change by pushing through reforms that will affect lives on a regular basis, no pun intended. We few, we happy few, we band of tigers; For he today that votes for 2-ply with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in Princeton now-a-bed Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That voted with us upon Election day. I respond to emails within 24hrs. USG Vice President
Sam Dorison '01
I hope to be your next Vice President because I believe the USG can more effectively improve the lives of students by providing a strong voice for the student body. As a former College Council Chair and member of the Undergraduate Life Committee, I worked with administrators and students on issues ranging from alcohol policy to sustainability. These experiences will be incredibly important when the USG represents the student body in discussions with the new Public Safety director and Vice President for Student Life. Along with my running mate, Jack Altman, I will concentrate the USGs efforts to provide noticeable improvements for students. Id appreciate you vote, and please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Alexander D. Pretko '12
Hey guys! This past year I've served in the USG as a U-Councilor. I've really enjoyed working on behalf of the student community as a whole, and I would be honored if you would allow me to represent you as USG Vice President. If elected, I pledge to bring efficiency, diligence, and responsiveness to the position, and I look forward to continue serving on your behalf in the future. USG Treasurer
Trevor M. Martin '11

Freshman Class Senator
Caity L. Downey '13
As senator representing the class of 2013, it will be my goal to effectively bring the concerns of my classmates to the attention of the administration. Specifically, I will seek an implementation of a better program that matches students with academic advisors that whose expertise coincides with a students interests. Also, I will actively pursue change regarding the growing problem of grade deflation, and gain a more effective academic calendar year. I want every member of our amazing class to become more involved with usg, and I will provide open communication as a representative between the students and our government.
Jamie J. Joseph '13
Hi, I'm Jamie Joseph and Im running for freshman class Senator. I would love to serve as class senator because I want to give back to what has been and Im sure will continue to be a great community of people. I did Student Government for three years at my high school, and I loved it: Im great at working with other students and speaking up when Ive got an opinion that needs to be heard. Grade deflation, alcohol policiesno matter what we talk about, I can be a firm and respected voice for the freshman class. So if you want a candidate who will make your voice heard, vote for Jamie Joseph for Class of 2013 Senator.
Jacob B. Reses '13
Here are some issues I have a keen interest in and would like to address as a senator:Eating clubs- I am concerned about the potential implications of the establishment of the eating club task force. As a senator, I would work to ensure that the university does not encroach on the clubs independence. Elections- Too many elections managers have resigned prematurely, signaling that the position sets people up to fail. If elected, I will look into reforming elections managers duties. Local relations- I would work to strengthen ties with local residents and police. There ought to be mutual appreciation since we have mutual interests. Thanks for reading this. Don't forget to vote!
Stephen R. Stolzenberg '13
Stephen Stolzenberg will be the best Senator out of West Virginia since the legendary Robert Byrd. Like Byrd, I will look out for my constituents interests first. I will ensure that money is appropriated to continue your favorite programs like weekend movies at the Garden Theater and speakers like John Oliver, and I will work closely with whichever committee the class thinks it would be in our best interest for me to serve on. If you want someone who will outlast his competitors while fighting for you, vote Stephen Stolzenberg for Freshman Class Senate. Andrew J. Blumenfeld '13
Hey! Im Andrew Blumenfeld and Im thrilled to be running for Freshman Class Senator.I have fallen in love with Princeton over the past few months. I couldnt think of a better way to spend my time than by getting involved in what makes Princeton such an incredible place to be. Princeton grows and changes with the needs of the students and Id be honored to bridge the gap between your needs and those changes. With so many opportunities and resources, there should never be a moment when Princeton isnt leading the way in student services, and redefining responsive student leadership. EXPERIENCE: Youth Governor of California Presiding Officer, Conference on National Affairs Youth Secretary General, California Model United Nations
Catherine K. Ettman '13
Hello, Class of 2013! Heres the scoop: I was a high school student government officer and leadership-workshop junkie. As an intern for U.S. Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in Washington, D.C., I gained invaluable skills in communication, management, and policy writing in the legislative branch. As elected Governor of Florida Girls State, I made many difficult decisions in passing and vetoing bills as chief of the executive branch. As a Miami Beach native, I know how to balance work and play. Besides having keen discernment, I always have a smile on my face and an ear to listen. I pledge to vote on your behalf to show Princeton what the Tigers of 2013 have to offer. Come get to know me!
Richard L. Youngblood '13
Everybody wants to be a part of some type of group at Princeton. I feel that the student government is what suits me best. I am not going to list qualities that make me better than my opponents because everybody at Princeton is probably well-qualified otherwise they would not be here. What I will do, though, is promise that as your Freshman Senator I will fairly represent what our class has to say about issues and events on campus. I will make sure that our opinions are heard in the USG government. So with my best attempt to avoid a cliché ending, I would appreciate your vote for me and will not let you down.
Steven S. Rosen '13
I have the experience and passion to serve as Senator for the class of 2013. In high school, I was Student Senator representing over 3000 students and was the Student Representative to the School Board. In these roles, I listened to my classmates concerns and expressed these concerns to school administration. I hope to continue this service on a much higher level as USG Senator. One of the biggest criticisms of USG is its limited power to actually implement students objectives. Therefore, my main goal as Senator would be to improve the USGs efficacy by forging stronger working relationships among individual students and student groups, USG representatives, and Princetons administration. Ill work hard if elected. Thanks for your consideration.
Samson J. Schatz '13
I, Samson Schatz, am running to represent YOU. As a freshman Senator, I will voice your unique opinions to the Student Government, whereby ensuring that while we are the freshest, we can be influential. I am already actively involved in campus life, singing with the Princeton Footnotes, serving on the Dispelling Myths on Campus working group of the Alcohol Coalition Committee and sitting on the Crystal Tiger Award Selection Committee. I have previous experience in Student Government, as I was Vice President and President of my high school during junior and senior year respectively. Through this experience I have developed a deep passion for leadership, school policy and representation. A vote for me
is a vote for YOU.
Nick Lulli '13
Im a prospective Politics major and play Sprint Football. I wasnt involved in student government in high school but thought I'd give it a shot in college. Why vote for me? As your senator I would pursue two main goals: reform P/D/F policy and increase fiscal transparency in the USG. Since we only have four PDF's available anyway, there should be fewer restrictions on their use. We should be able to P/D/F a course after mid-terms, and be able to switch a P/D/Fd course to a letter grade after the semester ends. Also, it seems reasonable that every significant expenditure the USG makes ought to be posted on its website. Its our money after all. Anthony J. Pappenfus '13
The AP ONE THREE Campaign thanks you for your support! As a voting member of the USG Senate, I will strive to reflect the interests of the class of 2013 as well as surround myself in developing campus issues in order to provide useful feedback to the Projects Board and students. As I Examine the imperative issues that affect our experiences as Princetonians, I feel delving into action is of utmost importance. It is the painstaking efforts taken by the class senators and transforming mere words into tangible reform that will ultimately provide results we are seeking; I hope to do just that. Please visit my website aponethree.com to review my plan. AP ONE THREE: Anthony Pappenfus for 2013 Senator! Ross Powell '13
Hi, My name is Ross Powell. I'm a proud member of the Class of 2013 from Burlington, North Carolina. As a freshman here at Princeton, I would like to have the privilege to represent your issues and concerns to the USG Senate. Defending the social life here at Princeton in a positive manner is something that I aim to do. More campus-wide events, such as concerts and comedy shows, are key to providing an outlet for Princeton students to remain grounded in the valuable and fun companionship with fellow classmates that a university should offer. Presenting and solving issues with others in an even-keeled manner is one of my greatest attributes.
George M. Maliha '13
Hello Class of 2013. Many of you dont know me, but I want to be your next senator. I have enjoyed participating in student organizations and would like to represent you in the coming year. In our three months here, we have all seen things that we love about Princeton, but we all have ideas to improve our experience here. Lets do it! Academics Chair
Becca Lee '12
Im a sophomore from the beautiful state of Vermont living in Wilson College. My interests include womens club lacrosse, The Office, and long dinners in Wilcox. This past year I served as one of two 2012 Class Senators and was the point person of the Textbook Prices workgroup that brought you the Princeton Textbook Exchange. I was also a USG representative on the Undergraduate Life Committee. I am running for Academics Chair because I enjoyed my time on USG and want to continue my involvement in an increased capacity. Academics play an important role in the experience of Princeton students and deserve continued student input. As Academics Chair, I would be open to all concerns and suggestions. Undergraduate Life Chair
Michael J. Weinberg '11
As Vice President of USG, I worked extensively on several initiatives to improve undergraduate life, including lowering textbook prices, releasing the COMBO II survey, and mitigating the effects of the grading policy. I will continue to build on these initiatives as ULC Chair, bring new ideas to the committee, and leverage my experience to effectively represent the concerns of the student body. In addition, I plan to foster a strong relationship with the new Vice President of Campus Life to ensure that the ULC continues to be an avenue where students can positively impact the undergraduate experience. Please email me at mjweinbe@ with any ideas or suggestions. Campus and Community Affairs Chair
